# Non-human identities (NHI)

> Give every service account, API key, bot, managed identity, and AI agent an accountable owner, and catch credentials before they expire.

A non-human identity (NHI) - a service account, API key, bot, managed identity, or AI agent - can reach just as much as a person, but nobody logs in as it to check on it. Left unmanaged, an NHI accumulates access nobody is watching and holds credentials nobody rotates. Oleria governs NHIs with two workflows: assigning an accountable owner to every NHI it discovers, and catching credentials before they expire.

## Ownership assignment

Every NHI needs a human or team accountable for it. Oleria resolves ownership automatically wherever the evidence supports it, and falls back to a review-and-escalation process when it can't.

## Credential expiry

An NHI credential that expires unnoticed breaks whatever depends on it. Oleria notifies the owner with enough time to rotate it, and escalates if nothing happens.
